Jock - believe it or not, I am a keen follower of the railway preservation scene in the UK also! And what you did not mention was that there have been quite a few preserved lines that have gone belly-up in recent years, and quite a few loco restoration projects that have had themselves to be rescued. You will also know (an analogy with NS here) that replica engines are now being proposed - an A1 is half-built, and there are proposals to scratch-build a 'Grange', a 'Clan' and other examples of extinct classes. Proving what? It will not surprise you to know that I regard these as rather a waste of time and resources, and you may well consider me eligible for the 'cantakerous old buffer' title vacated, apparently, by our revered Webmaster (buffer being appropriate in a rly connection).

It seems to me that if the supply of money is finite, it should be directed to where it can do the most good, and this does not include trying to reconstruct the past from present materials - a naive folly. If that groups me with the Poles, I'm delighted, as I have liked and admired all Polish people that I have ever met.
