Are we confusing the two Swallows?

The hypothesis that Swallow (2) and Mavis, bought at the same time, were former working boats makes sense.

But Swallow 1 in which Robin Collingwood taught AR to sail was owned by the Collingwood family twenty years earlier. I agree that the Collingwoods were not rich but they could surely have afforded a small sailing dinghy. And this could well have been of the Coniston type.

I don't agree with John N that Swallow was imaginary. This wasn't just any book - it was written with a specific family in mind and starred the boat which they had loved and given to AR. He certainly might have tweaked details, but I'm sure that the enthusiasm with which we know they received SA would have been tinged with critical comments if 'their' boat had been completely different.
