I am sorry to say I turned to the end of the book to make sure all was well in the end !!!

So did I.

When I read it I was so young... But I remember to this day reading the last line, when they are at the Roaring Donkey to see the enthronement of the stuffed pike. Their names are on the case and an old man turns to them and says 'Poor lads, so young and nothing left to live for'.

It took me twenty years (I had other things to think about at the time) to work out what that meant. I think it's my second favourite passage in all of Ransome's books.
