Ed,
You've put into words a lot of what I feel was wrong with SW. (As someone pointed out earlier, though, 'wrong' in a Ransome book is still a lot more right than most books)

The 'disbeliever' for me is that Commander Walker would leave his children in tidal waters without making sure that a working clock or watch got ashore. It seems artificial, as if Ransome needed to come up with a reason for the meal dials.
