The reason why leaving the alarm clock behind was important was that it established the critical importance of tides in SW. Even Daddy was so terrified of missing his tide that the "last check" did not occur before he made sail and so the clock got left behind. The difference between Secret Water (the place) and the Lake is very clearly set out in that moment and in Titty's observation elsewhere that the tide is like breathing making Secret Water alive. All of this was necessary to establish the peculiar time frame within which the action in SW had to occur.

Far from being irritating, this episode ms to be a necessary narrative device for telling the tale. It also indicates the great degree of complexity about the adventure in SW.
