Given John's interest in following his father into the Navy, I should think he would have made a note of what subjects were required - my guess is that the prize was for mathematics.

The absence of Fathers, generally, in Ransome is notable. Commander Walker, who is mostly on the far side of the world, does at least appear as a character in two books, though, as has been pointed out by others, he is such a perfect father in every respect that his presence instantly kills the adventure - the worst offence we can lay at his door is forgetting Susan's alarm clock, in SW, and that helps the plot along!

Bob Blackett is dead, and Professor Callum, whilst also sympathetic, appears only as the author of a letter or two. Tom Dudgeon's father walks on, but is mainly concerned with the "victims", and has no time to spare.

Mothers, on the other hand, turn up quite often, but the biggest adult roles go to Uncle Jim and to Mrs Barrable.
