From memory, she was caught in France in 1940 and interned, and eventually married a Frenchman and settled in France. There are some details about her in Christina Hardyment's "Arthur Ransome & Captain Flint's Trunk" which, if you have not read it, would repay a search on e-bay or in second-hand bookshops. Apparently when Susie Altounyan went to a new school some time after S&A was published the other girls there were relieved to find out that she was not all that similar to Susan Walker in real life !
