Dick's watch would not have been all that cheap - his father would have known that, for Dick, a watch would be a scientific instrument, and would need to tell the precise time ('fourteen minutes past seven'). Prof Callum (based in London) would no doubt have gone to Harrods for a good boy's watch. A picture of the watch he probably presented to Dick will be in the soon-to-be-published 'Mixed Moss'.
