I think it certain that AR would have seen the Oriental Club's flag, flying over the old clubhouse, in Hanover Square. I don't think it so likely that he would have seen the Thai flag, though of course he might have done. My guess is that he remembered a green flag with an elephant on it, and either deliberately or accidentally changed the colour of the heffalump.
