We can really start at the beginning of SA and look at what the Father said "

Better drowned than duffers if not duffers will not drown.

This is a simple statement of fact and direction. It leaves it to John and Susan to decide what is dangerous.

Whereas the Mother is providing rules.

No sailing at night.

Which means we end up with a Tax Code of Rules.

The question is the philosphical one of "will they learn more by experimenting or by having a strict set of rules to follow?"

Interesting problem, certainly in the modern era we are looking at a strict set of rules, no leeway and heavy punishment for straying youth. The 60's generation has turned out a generation of parents and grandparents that have doused the modern world with a strong purgative. Has the Edwardian era returned at this time 100 years later. Children should be seen and not heard.

Perhaps it is time we brought some of the fun back to youth, and accepted the mistakes they make along the way.

Ah........ time to wander off to bed and wonder what brought this ramble on.....

John
