If someone is dotty enough to attempt solo exploration, the only advice I can give is Listen to your inner voice.

Jock:

I teach first responders how to get in and out of damaged buildings safely and how to look at a building and see if it is safe. I lectured several of the people who were in New Orleans and Houston (Rita).

Like John in SD - someone has to make a decision and some one has to be responsible. If you make the wrong decision bad things can happen, and it is your responsibility to put them right which is what John taught us in SD in getting up the ship and being the last off, and listen to your inener voice and chuck out the anchor. Also you can see in the novel that after the event and everyone is alright you can make it better again, just as long as no one died. The same with buildings I can replace a building, I can never replace you Peter.

In the Newcastle earthquake in the repairs we only left one quadrapegic (he injured himself falling off scaffolding) and one guy with a sore almost crushed head in 800 buildings. I thought I did well. In a building that is creaking you learn to listen to your inner bell, and when the walls are moving the bell is a very large tolling bell I can tell you.

Or as John Donne said so well:

Never send for whom etc.........
