More mechanically minded Tarboarders please yell at me if I'm wrong, but apart from dealing with the behaviour of metals under stress within the narrow limits at which Young's Modulus applies, school science doesn't cover this. I think that in the UK the collapse of metals under extreme stress is only introduced in university level Mechanics. But then the past is a foreign country and I may have simply been day dreaming about sailing when this was covered by our Physics teacher.

School mechanics was different in AR's day. Didn't he build a small stationary steam engine whilst at Rugby?
