And although this observation may offend Jock and Peter H or either of them or someone else, it seems to me that in building his boat, wanting to climb the Old Man etc, John is doing or aspiring to something that AR has inspired (directly or indirectly). That seems to me to be more than enough to qualify Mary Anne or his AR fantasies as suitable subjects for this discussion board, since a piece of writing has its continuing life not in the hands of its author but in the lives of its readers and what it leads them to think and do.

Hear, hear! I was going to post something similar to the "Swallow anew thread". But decided to save up my comment for a rainy day. For the two people on Tarboard who are interested in what I like or dislike on the board:

My five least favourite types of posts on Tarboard:

  1. Get off Tarboard. The topic has nothing to do with AR.
  2. Do not discuss this topic on Tarboard. The actual situation is so and so.
  3. You haven't changed the subject heading.
  4. You can't spell. [I KNOW I CAN'T SPELL!]
  5. You can't do that. [** *** * ***!]

My five most favourite posts:

  1. Those that provide additional information on the life of AR and the characters that inspired him, beyond that available in the Autobiography, the Biography and Captain Flint's Trunk
  2. Those that provide additional cultural and historical background to the period when AR wrote his books
  3. Posts that try to analyse WHAT AR did, and WHY he did it. [e.g. politics]
  4. Posts about sailing
  5. Posts about boatbuilding. [Scarab was varnished, like Amazon]

What I love most about the board - the way topics within a thread change like a vine thrusting in different directions.

My favourite poster, why our most highly esteemed and greatly beloved webmaster with his occassional deus ex machina appearances.

My least favourite poster? [Oops! Time to call it a day and go to bed.]

If I was left stranded on a desert island which Tarboarder would I like for company. Well Pru and Pam immediately leap to mind as fun loving folk, but sadly after long reflection I have concluded that it would have to be John N because he knows how to build a boat!
