and I would rather read THREE MEN IN A BOAT than any other book in the world - including the Bible, Shakespeare and THE PICTS AND THE MARTYRS. Even though J's views on women in boats are perfectly unreformed - and he would doubtless see no point in teaching them to row or sail "properly" because it's just not the sort of thing that the fairer sex can do properly.
But then AR's Genia was always First Mate and never Captain - and I don't know that he took his first wife Ivy out in boats at all. And AR was born only 25 years after J K Jerome, so they may have shared some of the same social attitudes.
