Small world --
CGN Nobbs was (one of) my Maths Masters at City of London School, my 6th form Master, and I was delighted to reward him when I got a Major Schol in Math to Cambridge. (I believe David Nobbs was 1 yr Junior to me at CLS and in a different discipline ..).
CGN Nobbs never mentioned his sailing interests, but chit-chat on outside-school topics was (at that time) sort of rare (being a day school), with 1 or 2 exceptions.
CGN Nobbs was much loved by all, and (in effect) dropped dead immed. after giving a speech at his retirement Old Boys dinner, wh must have been a shock to all present.
AR books were read aloud in the Junior classes in the relaxed days at the end of term, e.g. (I remember Winter Holiday wh didnt impress me at the time ..).
I'll definitely pick up David's autobio from Amazon ..
