Well if we went down the tidal Thames to London we could do both with virtually no effort. If we choose our departure carefully we could let the ebb tide take us down to say Chiswick. Have a few pints in the City Barge and then let the flow push us back to Richmond.

However, if you want a proper "Three Men in a Boat" holiday we should go on the non-tidal Thames. We could take a sail with us as well. Decent sculls are very finely balanced and as there is very little water resistance a skiff can be rowed with less effort than cycling a bicycle along the towpath.
