Actually I was looking on the Cambridge site last night. I had trouble making head nor tail of it.

Correct my mistakes please as this is from a casual reading:

1. Whilst there are Departments, the main entrance requirement is via a College. My reason for saying this are the list of entrance requirements varied for Archeology and Anthropogy to each colleges. The University published a list of A&A places available at each college.

2. Each college may have experts in each field and they live in College.

3. You take somthing called a Tripos - I have an idea this is some sort of exam or course of study that leads to an exam?

4. You get caught drinking beer, chasing ladies or gentlemen by the Proctors and you can be in trouble, I often wondered where the term Proctology came from - obviously some wit at Cambridge invented the term to get back at the Proctors. My guess is Roger would have been picked up by the Proctors - even if only for being cheeky. What College did the real Roger attend?

Ok I bow to Robert's greater knowledge of the the English Universities and ask the question which College would Dick have chosen?

I also liked the Entrance exam at one College which gave you several pieces of archeology stuff and you had to comment on it - a very nice way to tell who has been raised in a arch household or is really really bright.

(Nepotism lives - which is nice to know as it means the world is still at least a somewhat stable place.)

So if you have 4 places, which most Colleges seemed to have in A&A, you give 2 to brilliant chaps from some out of the way place like Thunder Bay, or Texas or Ghana who will do the academic stuff really well and give you exposure, and the other two go to future leaders in England who can help the College politically.

(Of course this is a paternalistic view of the world and I could be entirely wrong, but the problem is when you have limited spaces and lots of qualified candidates you have to make choices and one choice is - my gosh he/she already knows a lot of archeology and that means they have a head start.)

At least we are generally past the point of money buying entrance - which as Hawkeye said in MASH -
What is going to happen to all the rich dumb guys? (he included a colour designation as well, but I think in the modern era we can forgo the 70's observation).
