There used to be a calculation by Bill Wright on the TARS Website giving the relationship of days to chapters in each of the books. I found this very useful when I was compiling my paper (not yet completed for publication) on weather in the Lake District novels. The link is still there, but it leads nowhere. My question to the Webmaster as to what happened has not been answered.

Anyway, I re-did the work (for the Lakes books) for my own satisfaction, and found only minor differences from Bill's work.

Briefly: SA, SD, PP and PM adhere to real time and each day is described as it happens -- some in more detail than other, of course. SA lasts 15 days; SD 14; PP 17 and PM only 11 (the last of these makes it clear the holiday is to continue with the Swallows arriving).

The only one of the five with "collapsed" time narrative is WH. It occupies 31 days in all. Days 6 - 9, 14 - 17 and 23 - 29 are not broken down into day-by-day action but described in terms of the general routine over the period.

Doubtless when Ed gets around to WH we will be given more details.
