Jock in a separate email raised the point about competition (is the best word I can think of) between the Amazons and Swallows. In a large way I think that AR hit upon a management style for the group that is reminiscint of some of the best management groups, the rule of three -

John is the clear leader in a crisis and is the titular head of the group
Nancy is the brains and supplies the ideas - the real scientist of people
Susan organizes and gets it all together with Peggy as replacement for this role from time to time.

A good organization has room for all three and I always loved John's thoughts when Susan was in a native mood - keep your mouth shut even if you are the older brother and commodore of the fleet.

Interestingly enough when calm logical thinking is required to save the day then John is best at this in this group of three ie winning the race,- although I still think Titty is the brightest of all, stealing the Amazon.
