She would do the job brilliantly I'm sure, but it would have been unthinkable to have had a woman in the post until recently. It was also a requirement to be an Oxford or Cambridge graduate and to be frightfully clever. Dick or Roger at Oxbridge? Certainly. Nancy? Never!
