The best coal was Welsh steam coal, not longer available as it came from deep level pits in South Wales.
Possibly the worst quality in the British Isles was the Irish coal that came from the mines at Arigna. These mines were at the end of the Irish narrow gauge Cavan & Leitrim line that burnt this coal. The locos were usually enveloped in a thick yellow/grey smog which had a pungent aroma. They were not turf burning (usually)!!
