I'd always favoured traditional names, birds etc ubtil I read Iain Banks (or is it Iain M Banks) who has space ships with names like "Clear Air Turbulence" and "On meeting a new lover for the first time" bit of a mouthful though.

I like the idea of a spaceship called "Clear Air Turbulence" even though there's no air in space.

Does he by any chance have one called "Controlled Flight Into Terrain"? That's my favourite among the technical terms for categories of air accidents.
