I went to what was then a direct grant school, a category that no longer exists. Most people took O levels after four years rather than five. The school modelled itself in some respects on public schools and so had to have a Remove. The fourth-year forms for people who were taking Latin had Remove in their names instead of 4. If they had been named in a manner consistent with the other years, they would have been called 4 alpha and 4 beta, but instead they were called Remove alpha and Remove beta.
