Ross's comment about remembering a tip from Ransome to get him out of a tricky situation reminds me of the time I went camping with a forgetful friend. Having driven a couple of hundred miles from Toronto to our campsite on the east side of Georgian Bay, towing our Albacore, we unpacked the camping gear.
As we looked over the tent bag it suddenly dawned on us that we didn't have the small bag containing the tent poles. I had lent my tent to another couple of friends so we faced sleeping in the open with an uncertain forecast until I looked around our campsite and recalled Swallows and Amazons. I suggested using a long piece of rope we had for tying down the dinghy and a couple of convenient trees to keep the tent up. We ran the line through the holes where the poles went and along the ridge and tied it up nice and taut. It worked a treat and we even had a clothes line into the bargain.
