Altho' the Death'n'Glories were strangely shown in monogrammed school blazers in the Video -- they were, as we were constantly reminded, working class - their fathers not being in the indulgent, upper-middle class mode of Cdr Walker, et al. It is remarkable in CC and BS that AR managed to smoothly integrate their activities with Doctor's son, Lawyer's daughters and Professors' brats. Details of their finances, equipment, are carefully worked out and enumerated, and there is careful inter-class relationship (with adults) and noblesse oblige in spades (and servile realization of D'n'G's obligation to Visitors and boat-renters).
Other (young) locals were not allowed to become main characters or have much thought of their own -- Jackie provided rabbit, guddling technique -- Mastodon operates in some unexplained half-world (rather like Maurice in the Oxus books.) But bringing the Coots to the North - they are not locals, hence are not to be 'employed', or manipulated,-- seems to be very difficult.
I hadnt even realized that 'fishing for Char' was the plot (must have read too fast), altho' the history of Char in the Lakes, & their gastronomic popularity, is mildly interesting.
I'll have to dig out and reread CN.
