Half term is a holiday approximately half way through the term. When I was a school it started on Thursday night and finished on Tuesday evening.
Because we were at school all day Saturday (Rugby or Cricket in the afternoon)it was perhaps more of a holiday than it would first appear.
My own children had a full week at half term.
