They evidently don't think the difference is fundamental - nor do I!

Try hitting a granite ledge at full tilt with a dagger board - there is indeed a fundamental difference between that experience and hitting it with a centerboard that will pivot. If you are lucky, you'll sheer off the dagger board and be left with nothing more confounding than the question of how to get home without it. If unlucky, you will also severely damage your hull and be left with the significantly more confounding question of whether it's too far (and perhaps too cold) to swim back . None of your “touch and go” sailing with a daggerboard!
