I was speaking of what you call the thing.

Certainly when you are sailing you treat a dagger board much as you would treat a fixed keel. Personally I would try to avoid hitting a granite ledge at full tilt with a swinging centreplate as well - there would still be a high chance of damaging something.

One purpose of navigation is to avoid hitting anything at full tilt.
