I have a particularly soft spot in my heart for those of AR's books that included an unexpected and amusing twist to their plot. Often the denouement which is based on miscommunication, accident, or misunderstanding, is funny enough to make me laugh out loud. Thus in Winter Holiday there is the unplanned Polar Expedition triggered by Nancy's forgotten signal: Flag at Beckfoot = North Pole. In Pigeon Post there is the entire side plot of Timothy/Squashy Hat (not to mention the misidentification of the gold). It is in this tradition that I enjoyed the climax of the Picts and the Martyrs, the search for the GA, and her return by the Ds. I enjoy almost all the other books (maybe not SW) but these three have an extra element of mischief which I relish.
