My very dearest Dot,
Congratulations on your second place in English. I realize that you would like to beat Katriona in the English exams, but a second is very good at Bruton School.
Your father has been invited to give the keynote address at a conference on high energy physics in Miami in place of Professor Hawking. As you can imagine your father is excited and accepted the invitation. We will be away for the Christmas holidays. I am so sorry, but your father is determined to present his new research work before anyone else has a chance to publish the results.
Dick's school holidays start on the 10th, four days before your holidays. I have arranged for Dick to stay with his mathematics master until the 14th. He will meet you at the train station at Crewe, as the master has kindly offered to see him safely onto the train. Your grandmother is glad to have you for the Christmas holidays in Windermere.
I enclose the your tickets for the railway journey. Your grandmother will meet you at the station. I realize we had other plans for Christmas, but you will have a nice time with your grandparents.
