The reverse auction is, I think, the same as the Dutch auction, so called because it was (and I believe is still)used in the cut flower and bulb (esp tulip) markets in Holland (tenuous link to AR through WD and Holland). Perhaps you will find the answer to your conundrum in the work that I understand has been done on that very active and long-standing (since C17) form of auction in these markets.
