Indeed, but one rather loosely attached to the world by a shakey emprical premise. As the labels "drowned" and "duffers" are intended to refer to something and those somethings are open to examination; we are left with the obligation of considering whether members of D are, in fact, non-U (drown the aristocracy?). Unfortunately, the sea is awash with drowned non-duffers. On the other hand, if Cmd Walker's telegram is considered to be a performative, rather than a descriptive, speech act then it performed its purpose admirably.
