I would imagine that if they were using all these current electronic toys, would the Swallows, Amazons and D's have even met each other? Sometimes, it seems, these things tend to isolate and insulate people from each other. While some can be tools to further ones endevours like using a GPS to find the way, others pull on the cloak of the self to an extent the hand held "game" becomes more real than reality -- but, then in my childhood, comic books sort of did the same thing, and I don't really think my mind rotted ----- And batteries don't last forever!

I always found it exciting to explore old technology. When I read Big Six, I wanted to have a camera like Dick's with flash powder and all - read everything I could find on the history of photography - and for a while played in a darkroom! Now, I have a collection of cameras of that period and a knowledge of the social and historical aspects that all that entailed. Never did the flash powder, though.
