When I was in Top Infants (i.e. aged 7), our favourite reading matter from the classroom library really was a set of Sir Walter Scott's novels, each reduced to a paltry 64 pages or so with bright laminated covers. Splendid stuff for playground games! And all those tedious 30 pages riding into the wood, 4 pages for a fight, and then 30 pages to ride out of the wood were very neatly avoided. I've never liked unabridged Scott as much.

Let's hear it for abridged books!
