Jock:

The sail area of the Selway fisher is 35 sq ft, the sail are of the revised Mary Anne is 58 sq ft and the Scarab 92 sq ft.

I have plotted the boat length for the three boats against the sail area in a EXCEL plot. I can then fit an equation to the data points to obtain an equation of the form for the sail area in square feet:

Sail Area = (0.81 times (boat length in inches)) - 39

The regression coefficient is 0.9962. A regression coefficient of 1 is a straight line.

I am happy that my sail is about right for a 12 foot boat. I will however put a set of reef points into the sail.
