That was also the rhyme (without the "pee") that I was taught in the Boy Scouts to tie a bowline. The other that always works is for a reef knot:
1. Left over right and through
2. Right over left and through
Since learning that, I haven't tied a granny (ISTR that Roger tied a granny in either SA or SD, so perhaps AR din't know this rhyme or Roger didn't know his left from his right, even if he knew port from starboard).
BTW, the animated version of how to tie a bowline on the bight is the best explanation and demostration I have ever seen, thanks for the posting Adam.
