A very fast way to tie a bowline around, say a tree, is to make a slip knot in the standing part with your left hand (I'm right handed). Then, using your right hand, pass the end around the tree and through the noose of the slip knot and double it back. Then collapse the slip knot over the doubled end. It takes about three seconds, and serves to tie the knot, and place the bowline's loop where you want it in one operation.
