In post #20001 Dan Lind described tying a bowline after passing the end of the line around something and back to you. A good method to know as perhaps more often than not (no pun intended) you tie a bowline "towards" you, as when a painter is passed around a piling or through a ring and back, compared to tying it around your waist. John may have tied it that way in WDM ("...was waiting with a loop in the rope."), assuming the knot was being tied between him and the buoy.
