It's becoming clear that there are any number of ways to tie the thing, and everybody tends to find one which is most comfortable for them.
My way works and I am sticking to it, for sailing and for safety rope work, although I don't rock climb these days and might well use more modern techniques if I did.
But what is beyond question is that it is one of the most useful - probably THE most useful - of all the knots that there are.
