Interesting that Lord of the Rings is still perceived as a children's book. Given the reading age of all the others (AR included) LoR is too complex in some of its plot and in some places too scary (the death of Shelob the giant spider for example). Tolkien himself did not regard them as children's books or being a sequel to the Hobbit (a common view of them).
On the positive side I am surprised the AR makes the top 10 these days, as I argued in a previous post they are well written but they are not exciting in the current sense (as in the Harry Potter series - magic etc. to excite but not that well written).
