Dahl is a curious one to me - his adult books are very entertaining, and the short stories that were used for Tales of the Unexpected on TV are better on the page (also the ones they couldn't use are much better than the ones they could!). But... his children's books are a very mixed bag. He admitted that part of his popularity was he wrote about things other children's authors avoided.
