I completely agree with you about JKR. I have no problems with her borrowing from the Boarding School genre. It's a brilliant synthesis of her own ideas and a well established convention.
AR also borrowed. Some of his fans donated plots. SW is a brilliant reworking of Riddle of the Sands.
Does it matter if AR 'borrowed' character dynamics from Hugh Lofting? Only if it shows and spoils the story. For heavens sake, there was no Tarboard when AR worked.
