To me the appeal of WH (and what makes it my favourite) is that two ordinary children enter the world of the others that as a reader of the previous books you imagine is not possible. The Ds can't sail etc and are pooh-pooh because they don't know morse or semaphore, but the scene where they skate and the reaction of the others who can't is pure joy!
