Ed - I don't regard removal of the 'N' word as 'political correctness'. I can remember as a child the word seeming 'not right', perhaps it was my upbringing.
As to whether it should be changed in current editions is a trickier one, AR uses it as a colour description of an object not an insult or reference to a person. Either way, should or can we change what a writer has written - though there is an argument when we are talking about context.
