The Wrights were born, lived, and did most of their work in Dayton. They only travelled to North Carolina for about 3 years while doing their final tests with gliders and their first powered Flyer. The development work was done back in Dayton.

After December, 1903, they continued their experiments at Huffman Prairie (now part of Wright-Patterson AFB, and a NPS Historic Site) in Dayton. October 5 of this year marked the centennial of practical powered flight, the date when they flew one of their aircraft (Flyer III) for 24 miles in 39 minutes around the field. That was a significant advance as it was more time, and distance than they'd spent aloft during the 100+ flights of 1904. The National Park Service and Dayton Aviation Heritage celebrated the occasion with replicas of the Wright Flyer III and Wright "B" flyer (first production aircraft).
