I’m sorry but I cannot agree here. The word is extremely offensive to a significant proportion of folk. Whether or not it may have been readopted by certain groups is neither here nor there it is simply extremely offensive to large proportions of society and, perhaps significantly, is recognised as such by those who wish to be racially offensive.
The discussion, therefore, is simply about whether or not we should remove words which were not considered as offensive by the target audience at the time. My view is that the books are read by children now and whilst I disagreed with a previous thread that suggested that the settings were remote and incomprehensible to modern children I think that the use of this word risks rendering them just that.
