The important element in my post was that as far as we know AR did not intend to be offensive. Using words deemed offensive or insulting in print depends on a number of factors, particulalry were they used with intention of giving offence and are they read as such? Certainly, when I read PD the 'n' word does stand out on the page; but then I remember my maternal grandmother (who was born in the 1890s)always revered to brown paint etc. as "nigger brown" - she was no racist but had a Victorian view of the world.
