I hadn't noticed that before. When I was young, the more usual phrase was 'bran tub'. It was a popular fairground game, where a tub was filled with bran or other similar material, with parcels buried in it. You bought a ticket, put your hand in and pulled out a parcel, with no way of seeing what shape it was until you had chosen it.
