Peter, there's a difference between pre-publication editing which customarily is carried out with the knowledge and assent (however willing or otherwise) of the author and the posthumous and post-publication editing you're advocating. Please don't offer practise of the one as a justification for the other.
Perhaps Ransome would agree with your position; perhaps he wouldn't. But he, and/or his literary executors, should have the final say. Points have been made on both sides; may we leave the topic squarely in the capable hands of the literary executors?
