You may disagree with a particular (US) state law, eg the Texas “right-to-work” law, but I think that the ability of individual states to pass their own laws is the reason the USA survived and the USSR (where in practise everything was prescribed from Moscow, despite the plethora of states and territories) collapsed.

And though the minorities got their own country, the new countries had their own minorities. In Yugoslavia Serbia & Croatia still have Croat & Serb minorities. Like Northern Ireland & Pakistan with their Catholic & Hindu minorities. A genuine federal system (eg America, Germany) would have been better.

Of course China and Indonesia still follow the Soviet model, with Tibet & Banda Aceh run as colonies of Beijing & Jakarta. But interestingly in Australia the Northern Territory has remained a Territory, although becoming a State would give it more independence. If the NT was a State the Federal Government could not have vetoed a NT bill on voluntary euthanasia several years ago.
